How to ride a Bike?


To learn to ride a bike, the first step is to get a bike: hybrid bike, city bike, folding bike, mountain bike or road bike. Find out how to choose the right bike among all the ranges of bikes and choose a bike that suits your desires and the practice you plan to do.

Don’t forget to buy a bicycle helmet. The helmet is an essential element of protection , both for beginners and for regular athletes. Be sure to choose a size that suits your head circumference, because to be really effective, it must fit your head perfectly.

Before you start, take the time to familiarize yourself  with your new mount . Walk next to your bike for a few meters to test its reactions: turn, brake, etc. This step allows you to  know the reactivity of your mount  and to gain confidence in it.

To exercise, choose a quiet place and a quiet time slot, without car or pedestrian traffic. It is best to have a flat area available and a slightly sloping road. Have a loved one accompany you to guide you and help you in your learning.

Adjust the saddle of your bike correctly to learn with confidence: the saddle should neither be too high nor too low. Your feet should be flat on the ground and your legs slightly bent.


For this first exercise of balancing on two wheels, you have three options.

It’s up to you to choose according to your convenience:

1 – sit on the bike and push with your feet to move on level ground

2 – stand at the top of a slope with little difference in height and let yourself go down with your feet away from the bike

3 – make yourself push by your companion while keeping your feet outside

The goal of this exercise is to  find the point of balance . Use your feet to grope, push yourself, go right to left.

You should then be able to roll without putting your feet down at the end of this exercise. Be careful, it is possible that several sessions are necessary for you to gain self-confidence! You have to understand that speed is what gives you balance.

Very important, always carry your gaze far in front of you to keep your balance!


Braking is done with both brake levers and both hands. Keep in mind that the left lever operates the front brake while the right lever controls the rear brake.

Be careful not to brake suddenly or when turning, especially with the front brake . The front wheel could skid and you could fall.

Then practice braking exercises following your learning of balance. Use your brakes rather than your feet to stop. You work on balance and braking at the same time.

These exercises are mainly intended to get you to take control of your braking system to come to a stop.


That’s it, you keep your balance and you know how to stop without difficulty? It’s time to switch to pedaling!

As with balance exercises, push yourself up or down a gentle slope and put your feet on the pedals without starting to pedal. Stop after walking a short distance. Repeat the operation until you are comfortable with your feet on the pedals.

The easiest way to stop when learning is to brake gently to slow down, then take one foot out and lean to one side at low speed.

You are now ready for your first pedal rides! Always on a gentle slope or by being pushed by your companion, take a little speed then position your feet on the pedals and start to give a few turns of the pedals.

Be careful on a slight slope, you risk quickly picking up speed. Do a few meters then brake and repeat until you are comfortable pedaling.

Ask your companion to choose a suitable speed if your bike has gears.


Start by pushing  : place one foot on the pedal that is in the low position and stand up, towards the front of the bike and close to the handlebars. From this position, push off with the other foot on the ground to reach a consistent speed, then sit down and start pedaling.

A little more difficult, learn to start without pushing yourself with your foot. On level or slightly sloping ground, brake with both brakes. Position the front pedal above the level of the crank axle to have strength in your first turn of the pedal.

You must then combine three actions: release the brakes, press the front pedal and place your rear foot on the pedal to start pedaling. The world of cycling now opens its doors to you!


Bike schools are not just for children! To improve or simply learn to ride a bike, these schools also allow adults to (re) get in the saddle!

Because the number of French people who do not know how to cycle or are not comfortable on a bicycle in town is more numerous than one might think, there are multiple associations in France which offer these beginner cyclists the services of more experienced volunteers responsible for training and supporting them.

The most widespread bicycle schools are part of the French Federation of Bicycle Users (FUB), which has a network of 180 local associations. This acts to promote the use of the bicycle as a means of daily transport through the networking of local associations, consultation with the public authorities, and general public communication campaigns. Of course, the FUB bicycle schools are not the only ones in France. Associations campaigning for cycling in large French cities often offer this service.


You have now learned the basics of cycling! Congratulation ! But you are not yet ready to cycle around town or on a busy road… Use the parks or a quiet road to practice patiently and gain confidence as the miles go by.

To perfect your learning to cycle, you must practice a few exercises: changing gears, balancing at low speed, braking with precision, mastering the maneuvers and trajectories on the bike …
